With Christmas and New Year’s now behind us it is time to look forward to the next significant holiday and that is St. Joseph’s Day. Although this important day may have dropped off the calendar for many, it needs to be celebrated again. And fortunately for the IAC and its members, St. Joseph’s Table has been added back to the calendar for March 16.
Also, Father’s Day in Italy, St. Joseph’s Day dates back more than 1,000 years and is celebrated throughout Italy and Italian America. It started as a symbolic “thank you” and renewal of the Sicilian people’s devotion to St. Joseph after they experienced a famine.
The day evolved to be called “St. Joseph’s Table” (or “St. Joseph’s Altar” in some parts of the U.S.) because an elaborate altar is setup as part of the devotion. The altar is traditionally decorated with symbolic bread designs, pastries, lilies, fruit and much more. Needless to say, we will have a beautiful altar that you will not want to miss so be sure to RSVP soon to ensure you don’t get shut out of this great event.
If you’ve attended a St. Joseph’s Table in the past (whether here or in another city) then you know what a great day, it is. If you have never been to one, then come see what you have been missing. The club will be providing some food, but we ask that attendees also bring a meatless dish or dessert (or pay a small fee at the door). This is an excellent chance to showcase your culinary talents by bringing in a dish or to simply reacquaint yourself with an old family cookie recipe.
Much like our culture, if we don’t proactively participate and keep our important days and holidays at the forefront they will disappear. St. Joseph’s Table is a historically important day for us to show gratification for what we have and to continue a promise made centuries ago. Perhaps most importantly, it is also a fun event! So, plan to attend (you can even bring a guest or two) and be sure to RSVP before it is too late.
